The Harimau Malaya portal was formed in 2007 by supporters of the national football team. Morale and support for the national team was at an all time low at the time due to mismanagement, as well as a string embarrassing losses. The idea was to give support to the national team, no matter how good or bad they are performing. The term "Ultras" came from the type of sports fans renowned for their fanatical support and elaborate displays. The term "Malaya" came from the nickname of the national team and also the national symbol of Malaysia, Harimau Malaya. Ultras Malaya uses black and yellow color as it is the Malaysia national team home kit color and represents the color of the Malayan Tiger.

Their official name of the organization is the Ultras Malaya and its official color is black and yellow.
